Mass Senior Care Association (MSCA) has joined with the American Health Care Association (AHCA) and many others to sign a petition advocating for the inclusion of nursing as a STEM designated field on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) STEM Designated Program List. The petition outlines how nursing integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and how it aligns with the Department of Homeland Security definition of a STEM field, one that “engages students in research, innovation or development of new technologies using engineering, mathematics, computer science or natural sciences (including physical, biological, and agricultural sciences.”

STEM designation matters because it would help those immigrants who achieve a U.S. degree in nursing (BSN or MSN) obtain an additional 24 months of work authorization after graduation (like other STEM occupations) if they work for an employer that is in E-verify. Right now, they are limited to 12 months, and with retrogression that 12 months expires before the visa number becomes available to file for adjustment of status within the U.S. and obtain work authorization via the permanent residence process. STEM designation would also unlock millions in federal funding for recruitment programs and expand opportunities for international students.
